Lower Peninsula gold mining files, 1916-1955.

Series 2 of record group RG 82-78 consists of information files on gold mining in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan for the years 1916-1955. The bulk of the collection pertains to mining in Alpena County, primarily Wilson Township, and contains newsletters of Cole Petroleum Co. and Thunder Bay Syndicate along with correspondence, legal action papers, test results and maps. The collection also contains information on sites in Alma (Gratiot County), Atlanta (Montmorency County), Brighton (Livingston County), Central Lake (Antrim County), Flint (Genesee County), Grand Rapids (Kent County), Montrose (Genesee County), and Ortonville (Oakland County). Also in the collection are newspaper articles on the Herron Mine explosion (Alpena County) which killed 5 men.
